The Benefits of Blackout Curtains

Some people need complete darkness in order to have a good night’s sleep. Other people, like me, can sleep on a washing line and light or dark does not affect us. But for the people who need total darkness, then a curtain or blind at the window that allows light through is akin to torture as they just cannot sleep.
What is a Blackout Lining?
Blackout lining is a heavy, dense fabric that stops light filtering through the fabric at the window. Here is a photograph of a client’s window showing the existing curtain on the left and the new curtain made by us with blackout lining on the right.

What other rooms benefit from blackout curtains?
As an interiors professional, I recommend any window dressing having blackout lining, whether it is I a bedroom or not. The benefits in a bedroom are obvious, but elsewhere?
Well, we may not have constant, year-round sunshine in the UK, but the sun’s rays when they are out are still very powerful and can fade beautiful fabric and even degrade them so much (such as silk) that they either need repairs or replacing.
A good blackout lining will go a long way to protect the fabric, it will allow the colours or patterns of the fabric to be clearly seen. When used with roman blinds, it helps to create a nice clean fold line, allowing the folds to simply fall into place time and time again.
